Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2009 Product #23480 (In Stock)
Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2009 Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2009

Bodegas Borsao is one of the very top Garnacha (Grenache) specialists in what is arguably Spain’s best region for this juicy, red-fruited, grape - Campo de Borja.  Unlike the Borsao’s entry-level Campo de Borja, the Monte Oton is 100% Grenache grown in single mountainside vineyard on the slopes of the extinct Moncayo volcano.   Very cold winters and dry, hot, summers and rocky, poor, soils give the grapes a chance to struggle and develop both sweet ripeness and a minerally complexity.  Fantastic value!

“The 2009 Monte Oton, also 100% Garnacha, is a step up [from the regular Campo de Borja]. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is richer, denser, and more layered than the Vina Borgia. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.”Wine Advocate 87 points

“Plump and velvety, this fruity red offers plum, blackberry and tangerine flavors, accented with vanilla and licorice. Not muscular, but generous. Drink now through 2012.”Wine Spectator 87 points

Borsao Campo De Borja 2008 Borsao Campo De Borja 2008

Delight in a spectacle of plum-raspberry aromas, very spicy and with a fruity retro-nasal aroma. With all of the sharpness and brilliance of its cherry red tones, and then in the mouth, this wine has a smooth and balanced passage with the great intensity of the fruit provided by its youth. Its aftertaste is long and pleasing.  Winemaker Notes

Bodega Tintoralba Garnacha 2009 Product #23470 (In Stock)

A colorful label for a colorful grape!  This is 100% Garnacha Tintorera, the Spanish name for France’s Alicante Bouschet.  Most red wines have white pulp and juice - the finished wine’s red color is extracted from the grape skins during maceration.  Garnacha Tinotorera is one of a small number of grapes that have red flesh and juice - giving the wine an extra dark color. The result - a big, plush, dark-fruited, wine that’s just plain fun to drink.  Recommended by The Washington Post as a fine “Recession Buster” - gulp a little down tonight!

“Not a lot of complexity here, just in-your-face, smoky, juicy fun. It's garnacha (grenache) at its cheap-date best.” - Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post, August 11, 2010

Las Colinas Del Ebro Garnacha Blanca 2009 Product #23469 (In Stock)
Las Colinas Del Ebro Garnacha Blanca 2009 Las Colinas Del Ebro Garnacha Blanca 2009

Here's a fantastic summer white - crisp, clean, and super refreshing.  Great value and a perfect match with seafood, salads, or visiting with friends on the back deck.  Recommended by The Washington Post as a fine "Recession Buster" - but I think it's more of a "hot, sticky, afternoon buster" myself!

"This crisp, refreshing white wine is ideal on a hot summer evening and an excellent pairing for shellfish from the grill." Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post, August 11, 2010

"The 2009 Colinas del Ebro Garnacha Blanca (100%) was made from 100-year-old vines and fermented and raised in stainless steel. Medium straw-colored, it displays a perfume of mineral, candle wax, baking spices, nutmeg, and pit fruits. On the palate it has plenty of spicy fruit, good depth and concentration, and medium length. Drink this very good value over the next 1-2 years."Wine Advocate 87 points

Vina Oropendola Verdejo Rueda 2008 Product #22112 (In Stock)
Vina Oropendola Verdejo Rueda 2008 Vina Oropendola Verdejo Rueda 2008

This is easily the best Verdejo we've tasted here at Cecile's in the past two years.  At its best, Verdejo should be highly aromatic (fresh cut grass, laurel, citrus) and full of fruit and substance -- simultaneously rich and refreshing.  Too many Verdejo wines we see are either lean and dominated by herbaceous elements or are fat and lacking real cut and character.

Not the Vina Oropendola Verdejo 2007!  This is 100% Verdejo from low-yielding old vines (40-120 years) fermented in stainless steel and then aged for 7 months on the lees.  The wine opens with and explosion of aromas -- melon, citrus, flowers, green melon and a fantastic whack of fresh cut grass.  In the mouth, the party continues -- the wine is just bursting with flavors of green melon, lychee, citrus fruits, fruit blossoms, and even a bit of black pepper.  It's wonderfully round and full in the mouth, with fantastic acidity that allows the wine to finish refreshing and dry.

This wine is good.  Really good.  Screamingly good.  Buy a lot.

Bodegas y Vinedos del Sayago’s 2008 Vina Oropendola Verdejo was sourced from 40- to 120-year-old vines, aged on its lees for 2 months, followed by an additional 3 months in tank. It offers up an enticing and complex bouquet of lemon blossom, passion fruit, guava, white figs, and spring flowers. This is followed by a layered, concentrated, spicy offering with a long, refreshing finish. It is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 2 years.Wine Advocate 90 points

Clua El Sola D'en Pol Barrica Tinto 2005 Product #20905 (In Stock)
Clua El Sola D'en Pol Barrica Tinto 2005 Clua El Sola D'en Pol Barrica Tinto 2005

Xavier Clua is among the most celebrated wine makers in the up-and-coming Terra Alta region, just southwest of Priorat. Born into a family with over four generations in wine making, Xavier is producing outstanding wines from carefully tended old-vine vineyards and a judicious blending of modern technology (temperature control, stainless) and wine making tradition (old basket presses and minimal intervention).  The Mas d'en Pol Negre Barrica is a blend of Garnacha, Syrah, Cabernet, and Merlot that receives about six months aging in French oak barrels.  It's a rich but vibrant wine, with loads of ripe black fruit framed nicely by oak spice.  The tannins are very fine and there's plenty of acidity here to keep it fresh on the finish.  This has opened up very nicely over the past 9 months!  Perfect with just about anything coming off the grill.

"The 2005 Mas d-en Pol Barrica Tinto is made up of 40% Garnacha, 20% Syrah, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. It was aged for 8 months in French barriques. Dark ruby-colored, it gives up aromas of slate/mineral, spice box, black cherry, black currant, and incense. Racy and elegant on the palate, it, too, displays a bit of rusticity along with plenty of savory fruit, enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years, and a chewy finish. Drink this outstanding value over the next 6-8 years."Wine Advocate 91 points

Godeval Valdeorras Bianco 2008 Product #22892 (In Stock)
Godeval Valdeorras Bianco 2008 Godeval Valdeorras Bianco 2008

"Founded in 1987, Godeval not only resurrected the ruins of the 12th century Monastery of San Miguel de Xagoaza, where the winery is located, but also resurrected the all but forgotten ancient varietal, Godello.  The estate owned vineyards are located high on a ridge that dominates the valley. The slate soils lends a unique minerality to this crisp white wine which is a perfect accompaniment for seafood and fresh shellfish." Winery Notes

"Green-tinged gold. Pungent, expressive bouquet evokes peach pit, almond, tarragon and white pepper. Deep, chewy pit and orchard fruit flavors are complemented by hints of spice and dried flowers, with the tarragon note repeating on the finish. This wine could stand up to strongly flavored foods. (Fine Estates from Spain, Dedham, MA)"- Josh RaynoldsInternational Wine Cellar 89 points

"The 2008 Vina Godeval was fermented and aged in stainless steel. Light gold-colored with an earth/mineral and melon-scented bouquet; on the palate it is creamy-textured with excellent depth and balance. Drink this excellent value over the next 3 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Bodegas O'Ventosela Vina Leirina Ribeiro 2008 Product #22533 (In Stock)
Bodegas O'Ventosela Vina Leirina Ribeiro 2008 Bodegas O'Ventosela Vina Leirina Ribeiro 2008

One of the most stunning white wines from Spain we've tried in the past few years, the 2008 Vina Leirina crackles with energy and flavor.  A blend of Treixadura, Verdejo and Godello, this drinks like a Muscadet or Chablis - very crisp and mineral laced, but with a Spanish flair.  Aromas of wet stones, green orchard fruits, white flowers and a touch of lime skin lead to a bright, vibrant, palate laced with mineral, lime, floral, and peach skin flavors.  Fantastic with seafood of any kind, there's enough body and extract here to work as a refreshing sipper too.

"The 2008 Vina Leirinia is a blend of Treixadura, Albarino, and Godello fermented and aged in stainless steel. Medium straw-colored, it displays an expressive nose of mineral, melon, lemon zest, and spring flowers. On the palate it has vibrant acidity, excellent focus, and plenty of spicy fruit. Drink this balanced Ribeiro over the next 3-4 years. It is an outstanding value."Wine Advocate 91 points

Ulacia Txakolina Blanco 2009 Product #23245 (In Stock)

For those not familiar with Txakoli, it is an effervescent, dry white wine that comes out of the Basque region of Spain. The wine is a great aperitif and resembles a drier style of Vinho Verde.
The Ulacia Txacoli is perfect for citrus loving wine drinkers. The wine carries wonderful aromas of lime zest and green pear. On the palate, the wine pop with a little green apple skin and lemon. As we mentioned before, the wine is a GREAT aperitif that can be deliciously accompanied with steamed seafood dishes spiced with some a slight does of sweet paprika.

"The 2009 Ulacia is a fine example of Txakoli. Upon removing the cork, an enticing nose of lemon-lime, sea-salt, and mineral jumps from the bottle under pressure from the captured carbon dioxide. Crisp, refreshing, and concentrated (the 2009 vintage seems to provide these wines an extra lift), it will pair beautifully with raw bar over the next 12-18 months."Wine Advocate 89 points

Txomin Etxaniz Txakoli Getaria 2009 Product #22857 (In Stock)

This is close to the most perfect shellfish (or just hot muggy afternoon) wine ever.  Grown in the high hills of Spain's Basque country overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Txomin Etxaniz Getaria is a blend of 75% hondarrabi zuri and 25% hondarrabi beltza grapes indigenous to the region.  Fermented and aged in stainless steel with a few months aging on the lees, the 2009 Getaria is the epitome of freshness.  Generous aromas of citrus, wet stones and flowers start.  Then, it's clean, very crisp, and a little prickly on the tongue (some dissolved CO2) with green apple and citrus fruit complemented by notes of talc and orange zest.  Long and energetic on the finish.  A fantastic wine for shellfish!

"Txomin Etxaniz’s 2009 Txakoli de Guetaria remains the prototype. Light straw-colored with an enticing bouquet of sea salt, mineral, baking spices, spring flowers and green apple, on the palate it is crisp, vibrant, impeccably balanced, and totally refreshing. But beware, its low alcohol and hint of spritz makes it go down very easy; in an instant the bottle is empty and you’re ready for more. If you have some ability to delay gratification, note that it should be consumed over the next 12-18 months."Wine Advocate 90 points

Celler Escoda Coll Del Sabater 2005 Product #21526 (In Stock)
Celler Escoda Coll Del Sabater 2005 Celler Escoda Coll Del Sabater 2005

When you encounter a wine from Cellar Escoda, it's a good idea to put away any preconceptions you may have about "Spanish wine".  This is a producer that works high-altitude, cool-climate, vineyards in the Conca de Barbera DO in Catalonia.  Although they work with traditional Spanish varietals too, we've been most impressed by wines like this 60/40 Cab Franc/Merlot blend -- the same blend used in Bordeaux by Cheval Blanc.
The wine opens with stunning aromatics of dark cherry and herbs before proceeding to a bright, energetic, palate that features cherry, red currant, and red plum fruit spiced up by hints of tobacco and marjoram.  Just fantastic energy and zing balance out the ripe fruit.  Only 20 barrels made and just a tiny bit imported.

"The 2005 Coll del Sabater is made up of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot aged for 10 months in French oak. Inky purple in color, it exhibits an expressive nose of Asian spices, scorched earth, smoke, mineral, and assorted black fruits. Mouth-filling on the palate, it has layers of spicy fruit, plenty of ripe tannin, and a lengthy finish. Give it 4-6 years to fully unwind and drink it from 2015 to 2025."

Celler Escoda-Sanahuja’s 15 acre estate, founded in 2003, is organically farmed using biodynamic principles. In the winery no sulfur is used unless absolutely necessary and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration.Wine Advocate 92 points

Clua Millennium Tinto 2005 Product #21451 (In Stock)
Clua Millennium Tinto 2005 Clua Millennium Tinto 2005

It would be very hard to find a wine of this quality, complexity, and grace from anywhere in the world for <$45.  From the high altitude vineyards of Terra Alta, the Clua Millennium is a blend of 60% Garnatxa Negre (Grenache), 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, 3% Merlot and a touch of Pinot Noir. The nose is big and flamboyant with complex aromas of roses, red fruit, smoke and slate jumping out of the glass. In the mouth the fruit heads towards black raspberry/blueberry with more slate, smoke, and compelling notes of anise and spice and just a touch of blood orange acidity. Powerful yet elegant, the wine shows a big blast of flavor without any hint of heaviness or thickness. The finish is very long and lovely, with the big fruit covering up the ripe tannin the wine will use to age gracefully for years. An easy wine to love, and a great value.

"The purple-colored 2005 Millennium Tinto, a wine made only in the better vintages, is made up of 60% Garnacha, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, and the balance Monastrell and Pinot Noir. It was aged for 12 months in 50% new French oak. It presents a more complex and sophisticated perfume including notes of sandalwood, crushed stone, black truffle, spice box, violets, black cherry, and black currant. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, it has excellent volume, succulent fruit, well-concealed tannin, and a lengthy, pure finish. Give it another 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it from 2012 to 2020."Wine Advocate 92 points
