Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2009 Product #23480 (In Stock)
Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2009 Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2009

Bodegas Borsao is one of the very top Garnacha (Grenache) specialists in what is arguably Spain’s best region for this juicy, red-fruited, grape - Campo de Borja.  Unlike the Borsao’s entry-level Campo de Borja, the Monte Oton is 100% Grenache grown in single mountainside vineyard on the slopes of the extinct Moncayo volcano.   Very cold winters and dry, hot, summers and rocky, poor, soils give the grapes a chance to struggle and develop both sweet ripeness and a minerally complexity.  Fantastic value!

“The 2009 Monte Oton, also 100% Garnacha, is a step up [from the regular Campo de Borja]. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is richer, denser, and more layered than the Vina Borgia. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.”Wine Advocate 87 points

“Plump and velvety, this fruity red offers plum, blackberry and tangerine flavors, accented with vanilla and licorice. Not muscular, but generous. Drink now through 2012.”Wine Spectator 87 points

Sella & Mosca Cannonau Di Sardegna Riserva 2006 Sella & Mosca Cannonau Di Sardegna Riserva 2006

Cannonau, known as Grenache in Spain and Alicante in Spain, is at home in the Rocky slopes of the Sardinian soil. The wine has a minerality in its heady red floralness, and also gives off soft notes of smoky vanilla. The palate is elegant with rich roung spiced plum and strawberries. Excellent structure with medium tannins and light red licorice finish. A great wine for stewed or grilled game.

Elizabeth Spencer Grenache Special Cuvee 2007 Product #23356 (In Stock)

A pretty serious take on California Grenache at a very fair price.  This comes from a south-western facing slope in Mendocino. As in the Rhone Valley, rough, stony soils force these vines to struggle through the growing season, giving tiny berries full in intense flavors.  The aromas are fresh and intense and show rose petal, bergamot, black cherry, lilac, and peppercorn. The wine is supple and round on entry, with smooth tannins beneath layers of ripe plum, kirsch and a hint of mint. Lively red fruit flavors shines through to a clean and persistent finish.  This will take a little chill on a warm day and shine with robust dishes.

Quivira Grenache Wine Creek 2008 Product #23473 (In Stock)

One of the big highlights of my trip to California in June was visiting Quivira.  Nestled in the hills of Dry Creek Valley, this is a fantastic producer specializing in Zin and Rhone varietals and a leading biodynamic estate in California.  So sustainable that they grow their own livestock and sell organic fruit and veggies to local restaurants!

The 2008 Grenache is a great introduction to Quivira and the exciting things happening with Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s leading varietal in California these days.  Aromas of meaty, smoky, wet stones and robust ripe raspberry and strawberry fruit.  Vibrant and earthy/smoky in the mouth, this shows a bit like a really serious Cotes du Rhone Villages.  The winery takes an oxidative approach to winemaking, which lets this bold wine improve with air - it’s actually better after being open overnight!  Fine stuff.

Keplinger Red Slope Grenache 2007 Product #23264 (In Stock)
Keplinger Red Slope Grenache 2007 Keplinger Red Slope Grenache 2007

195 Cases Produced; 10 Cases Available

A dense, concentrated, and layered bottle of Grenache that reminds me of Andre Brunel’s 2007 Les Cailloux Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire tasted last winter in the Rhone.  The grapes were harvested October 9 and fermented in French oak puncheons. The young wine was pressed after 21 days directly to barrel, and aged for 18 months in large format French oak (50% new) before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Youthfully closed now, after an hour in decanter complex aromas of wild strawberry, black cherry, jasmine, and herbs de Provence emerge with notes of exotic spices - star anise, ginger, and cardamom - showing with time.  In the mouth, the wine is big, round, and silky with layers of dark red and black fruits, savory herb, lavender, and a touch of clove flavors pumping through the long, slightly juicy, finish.  For me, this is about as good as New World Grenache gets - distinctively California but also firmly anchored in the traditions of the Rhone Valley.  Drink now with rich food like duck with cherry sauce or age for 10+ years and watch the wine become even more suave and complex.
