- Cf Lowenstein Rheingau Riesling Trocken 2005 Product #22607 (In Stock)
-
-
This wine displays some delicious pit fruit notes, despite being a Trocken. It carries a richness that is both well-balanced and exact. A wine that seems to be focus with fresh white peach and some very cool tropical fruits. Honey dew and and some tart pineapple cover the palanced and the finish seems to linger a bit of honey roasted almonds. A very interesting wine that is a perfect pair for Southern Asian dishes.
- Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2005 Product #22141 (In Stock)
-
-
People tend to think of Zweigelt as Austria's best red wine grape, but Pinot Noir shows excellent promise. At its best, Austrian Pinot is a cross between Burgundy's earthy elegance and the new world's fruit and richness. The 2005 Hillinger Eveline is a fine example with just enough age on it to begin to show extra complexity and depth. Ripe and full of black cherry/berry fruit, there's a smoky, earthy, note at first and then a pretty mineral streak on the finish. A great wine for mild sausages or grilled chicken.
- Clua El Sola D'en Pol Barrica Tinto 2005 Product #20905 (In Stock)
-
-
Xavier Clua is among the most celebrated wine makers in the up-and-coming Terra Alta region, just southwest of Priorat. Born into a family with over four generations in wine making, Xavier is producing outstanding wines from carefully tended old-vine vineyards and a judicious blending of modern technology (temperature control, stainless) and wine making tradition (old basket presses and minimal intervention). The Mas d'en Pol Negre Barrica is a blend of Garnacha, Syrah, Cabernet, and Merlot that receives about six months aging in French oak barrels. It's a rich but vibrant wine, with loads of ripe black fruit framed nicely by oak spice. The tannins are very fine and there's plenty of acidity here to keep it fresh on the finish. This has opened up very nicely over the past 9 months! Perfect with just about anything coming off the grill.
"The 2005 Mas d-en Pol Barrica Tinto is made up of 40% Garnacha, 20% Syrah, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. It was aged for 8 months in French barriques. Dark ruby-colored, it gives up aromas of slate/mineral, spice box, black cherry, black currant, and incense. Racy and elegant on the palate, it, too, displays a bit of rusticity along with plenty of savory fruit, enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years, and a chewy finish. Drink this outstanding value over the next 6-8 years."Wine Advocate 91 points
- Lovingston Est Res Red 2005 Product #21378 (In Stock)
-
-
This St. Emilion-style blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is grown entirely at our Josie's Knoll vineyard. Black pepper, mocha and a distinct cedar nose complement the supple black cherry palate and creamy finish. Held in barrel for one year followed by 13 months in bottle before release, this wine is ready now but will stand the test of time beautifully.
- Bzikot Bourgogne Rouge 2005 Product #23015 (In Stock)
-
-
On release this wine was impenetrable, but importer Olivier Daubresse believed in the wine enough to buy a pallet of it and tucked it away in a corner of his warehouse to wait for the wine to blossom. For those of you who know our other best-selling Burgs, it may help to think of this as a cross between Pascal Maillard’s Chorey les Beaune Rouge and Guillon’s Bourgogne Rouge from the vineyards around Gevrey-Chambertin. More structure, earth, and mineral than the Chorey but more fruit and perfume (and less wood) than Guillon’s wine. Wonderful, wonderful, balance.
Aromas of spring violets, ripe Bing cherries, and black cherry candy swirl around the glass, with the violet note especially pretty and prominent. Then perfectly balanced red and black cherry fruit are framed by notes of fresh turned earth, graphite, candied violet and tangy raspberry fruit. The fruit has moved forward over the past few years, but this is far from a fruit bomb - there’s a delicacy to the flavors and a pronounced mineral aspect all supported by firm, fine, ripe tannin on the long, earthy, finish. There’s plenty of vibrancy and structure to support another 5 years (or more!) development in cellar, but this is delicious now. - Ch Larose Trintaudon Haut Medoc 2005 Product #23324 (In Stock)
-
-
There aren't a lot of good value 2005 Bordeaux out there on the market today, so it was a delight to discover that we could still get our hands on this classic, Cabernet-based, Haut Medoc from one of the best vintages in the past 10 years. Larose-Trintaudon is one of the oldest, best known, and biggest estates in the entire Haut Medoc, so it's easy to overlook them when shopping for tasty Bordeaux. But, in 2005 this famous estate rose to the quality of the vintage and produced a fine Bordeaux for drinking now and over the next 5-8 years.
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot in 2005, the Larose-Trintaudon offers up generous aromas of black currant, plum, pepper, smoky oak, and a touch of truffle. It's fully flavored with plenty of ripe black plum and currant fruit, chocolate, leather, and a dash of black pepper. No hard edges get in the way of enjoyment now, but there's enough structure to stand up to roasted meats or a few years aging. Nice value.

- Bodegas Jaro Jaros 2005 Product #21153 (In Stock)
-
-
Here the wine is a complete reflection of what a great producer can do in Ribera del Duero with Tempranillo. Initally, the wine starts off with an attractive toasted oak character which offers fine points of mocha, chocolate and peppery elements. After about an hour open the wine shows a completely different expression of aromatics, the oak is complimented by the rich and intensely concentrated red fruit presenting a wine that has a smooth and flavorful mouthfeel with perfectly extracted tannins together with a lively lift of acidity on the finish.
The 100% Tempranillo 2005 Jaros Crianza was aged in one third new French and American oak for 14 months. Its expressive nose gives up aromas of smoke, mineral, leather, and black cherry. Elegant on the palate, it has outstanding concentration, loads of savory fruit, and enough structure to permit 5-7 years of further evolution. Drink this lengthy effort from 2014 to 2025.Wine Advocate 90 points
- Adriano Marco & Vittorio Barbaresco Basarin 2005 Product #21722 (In Stock)
-
-
You won't find a better value in 2005 Barolo or Barbaresco than the Adriano Marco & Vittorio Barbaresco Basarin. While the 2005 vintage in Barolo was a slight step down from the fantastic 2004, Wine Spectator's Italian citic, James Suckling, rates 2005 in Barbaresco the same as 2004!
This is a very, very, pretty wine. I get aromas of red plum, sandlewood, red flowers, and just a hint of the balsamic character I love in a young Nebbiolo. The wine is still fairly tight to taste, but already shows red berry fruit with just a bit of red plum flavors. The texture is round and concentrated with nice, firm, ripe, tannin at the end. Showing well now with an hour or two in decanter and food, this will really sing with another three or four years in the cellar. A fantastic gift for any Italian wine lover!
Plum, berry and chocolate aromas follow through to a full body, with ripe, round tannins and a chewy finish. Concentrated and rich. Best after 2012.Wine Spectator 91 points
- G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe 2005 Product #22551 (In Stock)
-
-
Unless you are a true Barolo "nut," you've probably never heard of Vajra. But to those in the know, this has always been one of the Peimonte's hidden gems. Vajra always makes classic, layered wines that marry a very traditional flavor profile (cherry, tar, roses) with ripe, almost gentle tannins that allow the wines to be enjoyed young. The special price we’re offering now is due to Aldo Vajra’s decision to try to introduce more American’s to his uniquely pleasurable, accessible, style of winemaking. We have 15 cases remaining at this price, and then no more.
"Vajra is one of Piedmont's best kept secrets. Here readers will enter a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level. Aldo and Milena Vajra's passion comes through in spades in these terrific new releases, which I can't recommend highly enough. The 2005 Barolo Albe caresses the palate with a soft core of perfumed fruit. This generous, open Barolo isn't likely to be a long-term ager, but it offers tons of class and elegance. The finish is round and impeccably refined. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019." Wine Advocate 91 points
- Celler Escoda Coll Del Sabater 2005 Product #21526 (In Stock)
-
-
When you encounter a wine from Cellar Escoda, it's a good idea to put away any preconceptions you may have about "Spanish wine". This is a producer that works high-altitude, cool-climate, vineyards in the Conca de Barbera DO in Catalonia. Although they work with traditional Spanish varietals too, we've been most impressed by wines like this 60/40 Cab Franc/Merlot blend -- the same blend used in Bordeaux by Cheval Blanc.
The wine opens with stunning aromatics of dark cherry and herbs before proceeding to a bright, energetic, palate that features cherry, red currant, and red plum fruit spiced up by hints of tobacco and marjoram. Just fantastic energy and zing balance out the ripe fruit. Only 20 barrels made and just a tiny bit imported."The 2005 Coll del Sabater is made up of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot aged for 10 months in French oak. Inky purple in color, it exhibits an expressive nose of Asian spices, scorched earth, smoke, mineral, and assorted black fruits. Mouth-filling on the palate, it has layers of spicy fruit, plenty of ripe tannin, and a lengthy finish. Give it 4-6 years to fully unwind and drink it from 2015 to 2025."
Celler Escoda-Sanahuja’s 15 acre estate, founded in 2003, is organically farmed using biodynamic principles. In the winery no sulfur is used unless absolutely necessary and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration.Wine Advocate 92 points
- Oremus Tokaji Furmint Late Harvest 2005 Product #21074 (In Stock)
-
-
Tokaji, the famous Hungarian dessert wine, is rich, luscious, complex -- and often veryexpensive! The Late Harvest cuvee from the outstanding Tokaji producer Oremus delivers a lot of Tokaji character at a reasonable price. The Oremus Late Harvest Tokaji is only released in good Tokaji vintages and is always a fine value -- the last two releases -- 2002 and 2004 vintages -- earned 92 and 90 points from Wine Spectator. The wine is rich and medium-sweet, with caramel, vanilla, honey and spice notes around the apricot and passion fruit core. It's smooth and balanced, with a hint of orange on the finish.
- Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2005 Product #22109 (In Stock)
-
-
For the past two years, I’ve been whining to Jonas about how much I wanted to have a “Vin de Terra-style” Rioja to work with. Well, here it is and it will knock your socks off. This is Bodegas Laukote's top wine, the equivalent of a Rioja Reserva. The fruit comes from three hectares of 80+ year-old vines - wines extremely old for Rioja. The wine is then given a cool fermentation before being aged in top-quality oak barrels.
Aromas of dark black cherry, plum, smoke, and chocolate explode from the glass. In the mouth, the flavors are intense and complex, if a bit primary still, with notes of black raspberry, red plum, coffee, and a bit of vanilla all swirling around your palate. A great mineral note emerges and expands along with the red fruit, oak spice, and smoke notes on the long and generous finish. This wine shows like an absolutely top-notch $50 Rioja Riserva – young and very primary right now, but built to age and deliver the perfect balance of fruit and classic Rioja tertiary character (black tea, flowers, earth) over time. A wine to buy by the case and watch and enjoy for 10-15 years."The 2005 Vendimia Seleccionada was sourced from 80-year-old vines. Purple-colored with legs that ooze down the glass, it proffers complex aromas of damp earth, espresso, incense, violets, black cherry, and blackberry compote. Elegant on the palate with a racy personality, it has plenty of ripe fruit, well-concealed tannins, and a lengthy, savory finish. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it from 2014 to 2025."Wine Advocate 92 points
- Tikal Jubilo Altos De Mendoza 2005 Product #23237 (In Stock)
-
-
"The 2007 Jubilo is a 50-50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec aged for 12 months in 70% new French oak. A saturated purple color, the nose displays aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, espresso, black currant, and blackberry. Packed and stacked, this densely fruited effort is layered, spicy, and succulent. Give it 2-3 years of additional bottle age and drink it from 2011 to 2022."Wine Advocate 93 points
"Offers loads of boysenberry, blackberry and fig paste aromas and flavors, layered with velvety structure and a long, fruitcake- and licorice-filled finish. This does a good job at pulling off the very ripe, heady style. Drink now through 2011. 200 cases made."Wine Spectator 92 points
- Clua Millennium Tinto 2005 Product #21451 (In Stock)
-
-
It would be very hard to find a wine of this quality, complexity, and grace from anywhere in the world for <$45. From the high altitude vineyards of Terra Alta, the Clua Millennium is a blend of 60% Garnatxa Negre (Grenache), 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, 3% Merlot and a touch of Pinot Noir. The nose is big and flamboyant with complex aromas of roses, red fruit, smoke and slate jumping out of the glass. In the mouth the fruit heads towards black raspberry/blueberry with more slate, smoke, and compelling notes of anise and spice and just a touch of blood orange acidity. Powerful yet elegant, the wine shows a big blast of flavor without any hint of heaviness or thickness. The finish is very long and lovely, with the big fruit covering up the ripe tannin the wine will use to age gracefully for years. An easy wine to love, and a great value.
"The purple-colored 2005 Millennium Tinto, a wine made only in the better vintages, is made up of 60% Garnacha, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, and the balance Monastrell and Pinot Noir. It was aged for 12 months in 50% new French oak. It presents a more complex and sophisticated perfume including notes of sandalwood, crushed stone, black truffle, spice box, violets, black cherry, and black currant. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, it has excellent volume, succulent fruit, well-concealed tannin, and a lengthy, pure finish. Give it another 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it from 2012 to 2020."Wine Advocate 92 points
- Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2005 Product #22104 (In Stock)
-
-
The 2005 Barolo Castiglione is especially taut and focused in this vintage. Floral notes are intermingled with dark red fruit, spices and new leather in this gorgeous, poised offering. The 2005 Barolo Castiglione uncharacteristically needs some bottle age but it offers integrity of fruit that is remarkable. Over the last few years Luca Currado has stepped up the quality of the Castiglione bottling in a major way. In 2005 the main vineyards in the Barolo Castiglione are Ravera, Bricco del Fiasco, Fossati, and Ciabot Berton. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025.Wine Advocate 92 points
Shows sweet berry and perfume on the nose, with rose and raspberry. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a milk chocolate, berry and vanilla aftertaste. Big and chewy. Yet balanced and very pretty. Best after 2012Wine Spectator 92 points
- Conceito Vintage Port 2005 Product #22459 (In Stock)
-
-
The young estate of Conceito was founded by winemaker Rita Ferreira and her husband just a few years ago, but the wines are already compelling. Rita benefits from a long-time friendship/mentoring relationship with Dirk Niepoort – scion of the Niepoort Port family. The Conceito Vintage Port 2005 includes 10% Tourigna Nacional from 80 year-old vines grown in a blend of up to 15 native Portuguese grapes.
We knew this was a great bottle of Port from the first time we tasted it. Nice to see the Wine Advocate recognizing it, too! - Andrea Oberto Barolo Vigneto Albarella 2005 Product #23313 (In Stock)
-
-
The reviews tell you all you need to know about how delicious this wine is, so here’s a little information on the vintage. Sandwiched between the powerful, dark, 2004 vintage and the highly promising (if muscular) 2006s, Barolo 2005 is getting a little overlooked. While lacking the weight and sheer stuffing of 2004 and 2006, the best 2005s are blessed with plenty of ripe fruit and soft, elegant, tannins making them highly approachable and enjoyable young. I think 2005 will turn out much the same as 1993 - a vintage that was overlooked on release but that gave us fine, classic, Barolo that has been drinking well for the past dozen years and shows promise for another 5-10 years of growth.
“Oberto’s 2005 Barolos are among the softest, most approachable wines of the vintage, yet they offer lovely overall balance. The wines all underwent malolactic fermentation in French oak, where they spent about six months prior to being racked into a combination of smaller barrels (70%) and larger 16-hectoliter casks (30%) to finish their aging… The 2005 Barolo Albarella is soft-textured and generous in its minty, floral aromatics and sweet red fruit. This is another beautifully-balanced wine with elegant tannins and an approachable personality that is showing quite nicely today. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.”Wine Advocate 91 points
“There's sweet fruit on the nose, with lots of toasty oak, milk chocolate and lightly stewed fruit character. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and fruit, vanilla and mineral flavors. Long and bright. Best after 2011. 540 cases made.”Wine Spectator 92 points
- Brigaldara Amarone Classico 2005 Product #23462 (In Stock)
-
-
Delicious Amarone that's ready to drink and fairly priced.
"The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a relatively straightforward wine but I loved it for its superb balance and harmony. Sweet red cherries, herbs, leather, spices and earthiness are buffered by finessed tannins as this soft-textured wine opens in the glass. This is a great introduction to Amarone. Curiously, the 2005 comes across as more advanced than the 2004, and I would choose to drink it on the young side. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015."Wine Advocate 90 points
- Uccelliera Brunello Di Montalcino 2005 Product #23430 (In Stock)
-
-
A touch less concentrated than the 2001 and 2004, Andrea Cortonesi’s 2005 Brunello is still packed with dark, ripe, fruit but also displays wonderful elegance and accessibility. Even with the addition of casks normally used for Uccelliera’s Riserva, production was off nearly 30% in 2005 - leaving only 1,365 cases for the world. We have 11 - and they’ll go quickly.
“The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the unqualified successes of the vintage. Dark, vibrant fruit melds into graphite, spices, menthol and minerals as this mid-weight, elegant Brunello opens up in the glass. Deceptively medium in body, the 2005 Brunello packs quite a punch, with tons of super-ripe fruit that caresses the palate and balances the tannins beautifully through to the close. The warm radiance of Castelnuovo comes through in spades.”Wine Advocate 94 points
