Most of Trinchero’s Napa wines are single-vineyard Cabernets, but the Meritage is made from barrel selections from the estate’s best sites. In 2007, the blend includes barrels of Cabernet from Mt. Veeder and Atlas Peak, Merlot from the Vista Montone Vineyard in Southern Napa, and Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc from Trinchero’s Central Park West Vineyard in St. Helena. The final blend was 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and just 1% Cabernet Franc.
I’ll warn you now - this wine is still quite young and is very tight on opening. But, with an hour or so in decanter, pretty scents of black currant, graphite, coffee, cedar, red raspberry jam and a hint of flowers emerge from the glass. In the mouth, black and red currant fruit swirl around and are accented by notes of chocolate, licorice, herb, and a touch more lead pencil. There’s plenty of tannin here and a fair bit of spice on the finish, but also good ripe fruit and coffee on the longish finish. Drink it now with plenty of air and a nice steak or let it mellow and flesh out over the next 5-10 years in your cellar.
